Why ChatGPT recommends your competitor and not you
For SaaS teams and agencies
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for the best tool in your category and read the answer. If your competitors are named and you aren’t, you’re not alone, and it usually isn’t about product quality.
AI assistants don’t rank products by merit. They summarise what trusted sources across the web already say. If those sources talk about your competitor and not you, so does the answer.
Where the answers come from
When an assistant answers a buying question, it leans on pages it considers credible and current: review sites, comparison articles, documentation and community discussion. Reddit stands out. In an analysis of 30 million citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews, Reddit was the most-cited domain in the US.
That makes sense. A thread where twenty practitioners compare tools is exactly the kind of evidence an assistant wants: specific, recent and written by people with no obvious reason to sell.
Three reasons you’re missing
- Nobody’s talking about you where it counts. Your best customers use your product but don’t post about it, while a competitor gets named in every “which tool should I use” thread.
- Your own site doesn’t answer the question. Assistants favour pages that answer one specific question directly. A homepage full of slogans gives them nothing to quote.
- You’re described in a category you don’t own. If the web files you under a broader or different category, you won’t come up for the questions your buyers actually ask.
How to check where you stand
- Write down ten questions your buyers really ask. Use their words: “best sequencer for a small team”, “alternatives to [competitor]”.
- Ask them in two or three assistants. Note who gets named, and in what order.
- Look at the sources. Where an assistant shows citations, open them. You’ll often find the same handful of Reddit threads and comparison pages.
- Repeat monthly. Answers shift as new discussions appear, so treat this as a tracking habit.
What actually moves it
The fix is the same thing that moves human buyers: credible, consistent presence in the places they read. That means helpful participation in the threads where your category is discussed, clear pages on your own site that answer one question each, and mentions from sources people already trust.
It takes months, not days. But it compounds: a useful thread from this year keeps being read and cited next year.
